Our Involvement:

Weed education

2008

In March, the Flathead Reservation Extension partnered with Lake, Sanders and Lincoln County Extension Offices to provide a series of Private Pesticide Applicator Trainings in Ronan, Plains, and Libby. The spring training was tailored for people wishing to obtain a Private Pesticide Applicator License.

Pablo, MT will be one stop on the 2008 Pest Management Tour. The Pablo stop will be held on October 21, 2008 in the Mission Valley Power conference room. The event will provide recertification credits for commercial/government and private pesticide applicators. See our Events page for more information. Don't forget...all Private Pesticide Applicator Licenses in Region 1 need to be renewed (six credits are needed for renewal) by the end of 2008!

PAT workshop

2007

Pesticide applicators who needed continuing education credits for their private or commercial licenses attended the March 2007 Pesticide Applicator Workshop in Pablo. The purpose of the workshop was to provide continuing education and credits for licensed pesticide applicators.

Topics and speakers included:

•Calibration by Sarah Holden, Montana Department of Agriculture Specialist
•Integrated Pest Management by Tonda Moon, Montana Department of Agriculture Weed Specialist
•Prioritizing Weed Management by Bruce Maxwell, MSU Professor of Weed Ecology/Agroecology
•Wetland Considerations by Sue Ball, CSKT NRD Wetlands Coordinator
•Formulations by Rene Kittle, Flathead Reservation MSU Extension Agent

The workshop also included an introduction to CSKT Pesticide Specialist, Willie Keenan and a discussion on Weed Planning Committees led by Virgil Dupuis, Salish Kootenai College Extension Agent.

2006

At our April, 2006 initial pesticide applicator training, 48 participants learned about recordkeeping, reading labels, laws, health and safety, personal protective equipment, worker protection, calibration and mixing, protecting the environment, and other related topics.  With the help of Sarah Holden, Montana Department of Agriculture, many people took a pesticide applicator test for commercial, or government license and certification, and Rene Kittle, provided the private applicator test for license and certification.  With a passing score, the certification allows individuals to legally purchase, apply, and supervise application of restricted-use pesticides.

Speakers included John Halpop, Sanders County MSU Extension Agent; Sarah Holden, Montana Department of Agriculture; Joel Fields from Wilber-Ellis; Lee Ohlinger from DOW Elanco; Jack Stivers, Lake County MSU Extension Agent; Rene Kittle, Flathead Reservation MSU Extension Agent, and Rose Leach from the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) office.
