Sweet Grass County has a variety of recreational and business opportunities. The county is situated with mountains to the North, West and South and foothills and prairie to the East. The county seat is Big Timber and it sits in the valley formed by the confluence of the Boulder River and the Yellowstone River. Big Timber is approximately 60 miles east of Bozeman and 80 miles west of Billings.
Sweet Grass County is known for its magnificent scenery and western culture. In the Boulder River Valley to the south of Big Timber are a vast number of hiking trails, ghost towns, several Forest Service Campgrounds and many geological features such as the Natural Bridge and the Indian Caves. North and west of Big Timber lay the Crazy Mountains. There are several legends as to how the mountains got their name. In one of the theories the mountains were named by the Indians because of their steepness, rugged beauty and haunting winds.
The county is 1,904 square miles in total area. Annual precipitation is 15.20 inches and the normal frost free days are 123.
